Building On

The addition to our house is a long and sordid tale.  After much frustration with our original contractor, he finally quit.  Our new contractor started in early August 2003 and finished on January 15, 2004.  From there, we've slowly continued to finish up bits and pieces of that as well as re-work some of the old rooms.

"Before" pictures of Adelaide's old room.
Was originally bright yellow, until she was born.
Then we read a book saying "yellow makes babies cry
and adults angry", so decided to paint it a nice calm blue.

Progress

  • May 2007 -- new bedroom for the kids done.  By done, as always, we mean trim work still to happen later.  New guest room done (thanks to Cindy).
  • April 2007 -- attic mostly done.  Trim work remaining, moving stuff (always) in progress.
  • November 2006 -- insulated remainder of attic.
  • October 2006 -- started finishing remainder of attic.  Frame, HVAC, and electrical done.
  • April 15, 2004 -- patio & back stairs poured.
  • January 15, 2004 -- A little over 1 year from when we first got financing on the house for a March 2003 start date, our house is finally (basically) done.  Sarah & I did a walk through today and came up with a small punch list of items to be fixed, but all is relatively well.  We'll still need to tile the upstairs shower and paint the mudroom before moving on  to turning the old kitchen into a dining room.  The next challenge will be figuring out how to get a mattress to the new bedroom.  A new concrete patio, stairs, and some sidewalk will go down in the spring.
  • January 13 -- the kitchen and downstairs bathroom are complete.  Carpet will be installed upstairs today.  Need to install flooring in the upstairs bathroom and then minor details from there.  Will be done by the end of next week.
  • January 3, 2004 -- Amy McGill gets married.
  • December 31 -- Jungle gets married.
  • December 22 -- It has been going better than these updates would appear.  The downstairs bathroom & kitchen have flooring & have been painted.  Fixtures and appliances are to be installed today.  The upstairs is all painted and has lighting, just needs flooring.  The upstairs bathroom is going to wait awhile to be finished ($$).
  • December 3 -- Ellen Jane Maupin born.
  • December 1 -- Painting has been slow.  Kitchen is painted, siding is on, cabinets are (mostly) installed.  Need to paint upstairs, install flooring & trim.
  • December 1 -- Payton Charles Messer born.
  • November 13 -- Siding is about half way on.  Progress is s - l - o - w.
  • November 6 -- Sheet rock is mostly finished.  We've started painting the kitchen.  Upstairs will be tan, black, and red.  Downstairs bathroom & entry will be grey & white.  Kitchen will be considerably brighter.
  • October 30 -- Finishing up the sheet rock mud & such, it's really starting to look like the finished product now.
  • October 25 -- Mizzou beats Texas Tech 62-31.
  • October 17 -- Insulation has started with sheet rock and siding to follow this week.
  • October 16 -- We're all framed up, electricited up, plumbed up, and (mostly) HVACed up, the shingles are on, waiting on city inspector.
  • October 11 -- Mizzou beats Nebraska for first time since 1978
  • October 10 -- railing for upstairs balcony arrived.

  • September 24 -- Windows & Doors delivered, remaining framing done.
  • September 18 -- Roof is done.  Windows & Doors next week.
  • September 16 -- Existing roof and ceiling gone, can see the stars from the bedroom.
