Of Scopes and Polyps
When the doctor tells you it’s time, go get a colonoscopy. In October or so that’s what my doctor told me, so we scheduled one. Then insurance changed, so we rescheduled one.
Due to various things found, I’ve ended up having 3 colonoscopies in 2022. They completely removed 2 polyps, one of which was found to be cancerous. But no worries, they removed it with clean margins and all was good.
Last week, at my third scope, they removed a third polyp and didn’t find any more — good news for all involved. However, the third polyp was also cancerous and they couldnt successfully get it all, so, something more to come….
Tuesday, I had a CT scan, MRI, and the assorted blood work that happens in times such as these. Wednesday morning, Kim and I met with Dr. Staveley-O’Carroll at the University to discuss options. The various scans showed no further spread, which was good news. They can do surgery to remove the remaining bit they were unable to remove during the scopes, which was also good news. This was basically the news we were expecting and hoping for when we walked in.
I’m scheduled for surgery on July 19. They’ll remove part of my colon and rectum, where the offending bit is. I’ll likely be in the hospital for 5 days or so while I become functional again, then will head home on restricted duty. From there, should just have scans every 6 months to make sure nothing else pops up.
If all goes according to plan, I’ll be healed in time for football and the Tigers’ first 15-0 season. And someone in the athletic department will make sure I get a Lot D pass again this year, despite all the construction shuffling. Football! FOOTBALL!! On a side note, screw ku.
